Why metal in Central Iowa
Why does metal roofing make sense for Iowa homes?
Des Moines sits in a part of the country that sees violent spring hail, summer derecho wind and hard winter freeze-thaw cycles. A metal roof is one of the few systems built for all three.
Hail & storm resilience
Steel and aluminum panels resist the dents and granule loss that batter asphalt in Iowa hailstorms. Many metal systems carry a Class 4 impact rating, the highest there is.
Wind rated for derechos
Interlocking standing seam panels are engineered to hold in gusts well past 120 mph, so the straight-line wind that peels shingles leaves a metal roof intact.
Snow & ice shedding
Slick metal surfaces let Iowa snow slide off instead of piling up, easing roof load and cutting the ice-dam leaks that plague older shingle roofs.
Energy efficiency
Reflective finishes bounce summer heat instead of soaking it up, and many homeowners see lower cooling bills from the first July.
40 to 70 year lifespan
The last roof most homeowners ever buy, outlasting two or three asphalt roofs and their repeated tear-off costs.
Value & resale
Metal boosts resale value, and its impact and fire resistance can qualify for premium discounts from many Iowa homeowners insurers; ask your agent.
Simple & transparent

Which type of metal roof is right for your home?
Standing seam is the premium choice: concealed fasteners, clean vertical lines, and the best wind and water performance. Metal shingles and shakes give the look of traditional roofing with metal's life. Corrugated and exposed-fastener panels are the value option for outbuildings, porches and rural homes. We install all three and tell you honestly which fits your house and budget.
- Standing seam: concealed fasteners, 24-gauge steel or aluminum, best for wind and water
- Metal shingles and shakes: traditional look, lightweight, Class 4 impact rated
- Corrugated and exposed-fastener: lowest cost, fastest install, ideal for outbuildings
- Dozens of colors and finishes; matching trim, snow guards and ventilation

Metal vs asphalt
How does a metal roof compare with asphalt shingles over the life of the home?
Metal costs more up front. Over the life of the home it is usually the cheaper roof. Here is the honest comparison.
Up-front cost
Standing seam typically runs two to three times the price of architectural asphalt. Financing spreads that into monthly payments.
Lifespan
Asphalt: 20 to 25 years in Iowa. Metal: 40 to 70 years. One metal roof replaces two or three asphalt roofs and their tear-off bills.
Hail and wind
Asphalt bruises and loses granules in hail and peels in derecho wind. Metal dents only in the largest hail and holds past 120 mph.
Maintenance
Asphalt needs boot and flashing work every decade. Metal needs a fastener and sealant check every few years and little else.

Answers before you call
Metal roofing questions, answered
How much does a metal roof cost in Des Moines?
Standing seam on a typical two-story home lands between roughly $30,000 and $46,000; metal shingles between $22,000 and $36,000. That is two to three times the cost of architectural asphalt, but the roof lasts two to three times as long. The measurement and the written estimate are free, and financing is available.
Is a metal roof worth it in Iowa?
For most homeowners planning to stay put, yes. Metal costs more up front, but its long lifespan, low maintenance, energy savings and potential insurance discounts usually make it cheaper per year over the life of the home, and it boosts resale value.
Will a metal roof survive Iowa hail?
Far better than asphalt. Steel and aluminum panels resist the bruising and granule loss that hail inflicts on shingles, and many systems carry a Class 4 impact rating. Very large hail can dent metal cosmetically, but it rarely breaches it.
How loud is a metal roof in the rain?
Installed over solid decking with underlayment, a residential metal roof is no louder than asphalt. The tin-roof-on-a-barn sound comes from panels on open purlins, which is not how we install on homes.
Can you install metal over my existing shingles?
Sometimes, over a single sound layer, but we usually recommend a tear-off so we can inspect and replace soft decking and install proper underlayment. We inspect first and tell you honestly which is safe for your roof.
Does a metal roof attract lightning?
No. Metal does not attract lightning any more than any other roof, and if struck it disperses the energy safely because it is non-combustible.
Do metal roofs rust or fade?
Modern galvanized and galvalume steel and aluminum panels with Kynar-type finishes are warranted against chalking and fading for decades. Exposed-fastener panels need their screws checked every few years; standing seam has no exposed fasteners to worry about.
Do you repair existing metal roofs?
Yes. Loose or backed-out fasteners, failed sealant at seams and penetrations, and storm-lifted panels are routine repairs. Free inspection and written estimate as always.
Do you offer financing for a metal roof?
We do. Hutch Unlimited works with Acorn Finance so you can spread the cost rather than paying in one hit. See our financing page for the options, and ask about it when you book the free inspection.
Is Hutch Unlimited a local company or a storm chaser?
Local. Hutch Unlimited LLC is BBB A+ accredited and has been locally owned in Grimes, on the northwest edge of the Des Moines metro, since 2021. Owner Scott inspects the roof himself and is the person who answers the phone, before the job and after it. We will still be here next spring, which is the question worth asking any roofer who shows up after a storm.
