Why siding fails in Iowa

What damages siding on Central Iowa homes?

The same storms that bruise shingles hit the north and west walls of the house. Siding damage is easy to miss until it lets water in.

🧊

Hail

Hail cracks and punctures vinyl and chips fiber cement, usually on the north and west elevations. It shows as half-moon cracks and dents, and it lets water behind the panel.

💨

Wind

Derecho-strength wind unzips vinyl at the locks and tears whole sections off. Loose panels flap and crack in every storm after.

☀️

Sun and age

Twenty-year-old vinyl gets brittle and chalky on the south side and cracks at the first hard hit. Fiber cement holds up longer but needs its caulk and paint kept up.

💧

Water at the bottom

Splashback from missing gutters rots the bottom courses and the sheathing behind them. We fix the gutters and the siding together.

Vinyl or fiber cement?

Which siding is right for an Iowa home?

Vinyl is the value choice: low cost, no painting, dozens of colors, and modern thicker panels stand up to hail far better than the thin siding of the 1990s. Fiber cement costs more up front, but it does not crack in hail, does not melt or warp, holds paint for fifteen years and looks like real wood. We install both and tell you honestly which one fits your house and budget.

  • Vinyl: lowest cost, no maintenance, best value on most homes
  • Insulated vinyl: adds rigidity and a little R-value, quieter in wind
  • Fiber cement: hail-resistant, fire-resistant, premium look, 30-plus year life
  • Trim, soffit and fascia wrap finish the job and end the painting

Check this from the driveway

How do I know if my siding needs repair or replacement?

Walk the house after any hail or wind event. Look at the north and west walls first.

🔍

Cracks, holes and dents

Half-moon cracks in vinyl and chipped corners on fiber cement are hail. One panel is a repair; a whole elevation is a replacement.

〰️

Warping and buckling

Wavy panels mean the siding was nailed too tight or heat has warped it. It will not lie flat again.

🎨

Fading and chalking

Rub a finger on the south wall. Chalk means the vinyl has lost its UV protection and is getting brittle.

💧

Moisture inside

Peeling paint or damp drywall on an exterior wall means water is getting behind the siding. That is the one to act on quickly.

Siding FAQs for Central Iowa homeowners

How much does new siding cost in Central Iowa?

A typical two-story home lands between roughly $12,000 and $22,000 in vinyl, more in fiber cement, depending on wall area, trim and how much old siding and sheathing has to come off. A single hail-damaged elevation is much less. The on-site estimate is free and the price is written.

Can you repair just the hail-damaged side of the house?

Yes, if the existing siding can be matched. On newer siding we usually can. On older or discontinued lines an exact match is not always possible, and we show you the closest option before starting. Sometimes replacing one full elevation is the cleanest fix.

Vinyl or fiber cement — which is better for Iowa?

Vinyl is the value choice and modern thick panels handle most hail well. Fiber cement costs more but does not crack in hail, does not warp in heat and holds paint for years. If you plan to stay in the house long term or you are on an exposed lot, fiber cement is worth the difference.

Do you replace the sheathing and house wrap?

We inspect the sheathing on every wall we open, replace anything soft, and install new house wrap and flashing before the siding goes on. The water management behind the panel is what keeps the wall dry, not the panel itself.

Can siding be installed in winter?

Vinyl gets brittle in hard cold and needs room to expand and contract, so we avoid installing it in deep winter. Fiber cement is less sensitive. Repairs and emergency securing happen year round.

How long does a siding installation take?

A single elevation is usually a day or two. A whole two-story house takes about a week depending on trim and weather. You get the schedule with the written estimate.

Will my insurance cover hail-damaged siding?

Most Iowa homeowners policies cover sudden hail and wind damage, but that is a question for your insurer. We document every elevation with photos and a written estimate so you have clear records to share with them.

Do you do soffit, fascia and trim too?

Yes. Aluminum soffit and fascia wrap, window and door trim, and corner posts are part of most siding projects and end the painting for good.

Do you offer financing for siding?

We do. Hutch Unlimited works with Acorn Finance so you can spread the cost rather than paying in one hit. See our financing page for the options, and ask about it when you book the free inspection.

Is Hutch Unlimited a local company or a storm chaser?

Local. Hutch Unlimited LLC is BBB A+ accredited and has been locally owned in Grimes, on the northwest edge of the Des Moines metro, since 2021. Owner Scott inspects the roof himself and is the person who answers the phone, before the job and after it. We will still be here next spring, which is the question worth asking any roofer who shows up after a storm.

Still have a question? Call (515) 313-7355. Mon–Fri 8:00–18:00, Sat 8:00–12:00.

The walls take the same storms the roof does.
