How bad is storm and hail damage in Dallas County?
Bad enough to matter, and documented. Dallas County was one of 27 Iowa counties approved for FEMA individual assistance after the August 10, 2020 derecho — the costliest thunderstorm in U.S. history. The Weather Service has also recorded tornado-force winds starting on Adel's southwest corner.
On June 7, 2009, NWS Des Moines documented an EF0 tornado with peak winds near 75 mph that began on Adel's southwest corner and tracked east-northeast through the city, with damage across the Hillcrest golf course. Mostly tree damage — but 75 mph is enough to crease shingles invisibly from the driveway. Three more short-lived tornadoes crossed Dallas County into Polk County on May 19, 2013.
On July 20, 2026, NWS Des Moines documented large hail and wind across central Iowa including Dallas County — one inch southeast of Waukee, with damage in Waukee and Van Meter. We will not oversell it: the derecho's 126-to-140 mph winds were measured in eastern Iowa, and the 2026 summary names Dallas County, not Adel.

Established neighborhoods — replacement territory
Wildwood Valley's HOA has been registered since June 1990, so its Wildwood Drive acreages are 35 years old and likely on a second roof. Sundance Creek's townhome association dates to July 1996, putting those roofs at or past the 25-to-30-year mark. Mill Creek, River Valley by the golf course, River Ridge Estates, Walnut Trail and Kenyon Hill Ridge complete the group. If your roof is original, look this year.
The growth is real, not marketing: a $7 million sewer project completed in 2019 opened roughly 1,700 acres east of the Raccoon River, and in 2023 Adel-DeSoto-Minburn voters approved a $58 million bond by 79.85% for a new 1,000-student high school on Highway 169, opening 2027-28.
