Norwalk sits in central Iowa’s severe-weather corridor and has documented tornado damage from the last four years. On March 5, 2022, the National Weather Service office in Des Moines recorded a long-track tornado that caused significant damage on the southeast side of Norwalk. Storm reports that evening describe damage to several houses and structures near county roads G24 and R57, and local coverage described roof damage, downed power lines and damage to the city’s public works building.
Two years earlier the August 2020 derecho — the costliest thunderstorm event in US history — pushed 70 to 80 mph winds through the Des Moines metro and cut power to roughly 101,000 MidAmerican Energy customers. Norwalk sits inside that footprint.
