Manufacturer Material Warranty
Every major shingle manufacturer (GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning) offers a warranty on their products. Standard manufacturer warranties cover material defects for 25-50 years depending on the product line.
However, these warranties have important limitations. Most are prorated after the first 10 years, meaning coverage decreases over time. They typically only cover the cost of replacement materials — not the labor to install them.
To get the best manufacturer warranty, your contractor must be certified by the manufacturer. Certified contractors can offer enhanced warranties that include labor coverage and non-prorated terms.
Workmanship (Labor) Warranty
The workmanship warranty covers installation errors — problems caused by how the roof was installed, not defective materials. This is the contractor’s warranty, and it varies widely.
Some contractors offer just 1-2 years of workmanship coverage. Better contractors offer 5-10 years. The best offer lifetime workmanship warranties.
This warranty is only as good as the company behind it. A 25-year workmanship warranty from a contractor who goes out of business next year is worthless. That’s why choosing a stable, established local company matters.

Extended and System Warranties
Some manufacturers offer “system warranties” when you use all their products — shingles, underlayment, starter strips, ridge caps, and ventilation from the same brand. These warranties offer the most comprehensive coverage and longest terms.
GAF’s Golden Pledge warranty, CertainTeed’s SureStart PLUS, and Owens Corning’s Platinum Protection are examples of premium system warranties that cover materials AND labor for extended periods.
